A Brief Introduction To GPS Navigation Device |
A GPS navigation device, commonly known as "GPS", "PNA" or "PND" provides users with turn-by-turn guidance (known as "routes") to their selected destination. It comprises three main components. These components are: - Hardware - the device that contains a GPS antenna to receive GPS signal
- Software - the program that decodes GPS signal, analyses map data and generates routes
- Map - the data used by the navigation software to generate routes, find addresses and points of interests
Is GPS navigation free? The GPS signal is free. You don't need to pay any subscription fee to receive GPS signals. Better still, GPS signal could be received at any open area in the world. You obviously need to pay for the hardware and software but they are one-time payments. Over the past few years, prices had dropped to very affordable levels. Map is the component where users need to pay. A local map is usually included with your new GPS device. If you want a more updated map or a map of another country, it is most likely that you have to pay for it. When choosing your first GPS navigation device, map coverage, quality and cost should be one of your most important criteria. |
